about me
Artist Statement
My practice involves exploring the intricacies and challenges of capturing the human form. Having grown up in a fast paced and digital media centred world, I find importance in exploring and continuing the traditional and labour-intensive means of capturing personality, character, existence and organic beauty of a being through the use of oil painting, life drawing and sketching. I believe that a painted portrait or figure is the most profound depiction we can create in a unique exchange from one human to another. Portraiture and figurative work is an incredibly sensitive and personal experience for both artist and muse as it is a unique insight into how one person truly interprets another. It is in this insight where my intrigue lies. My interest in figurative and portrait painting extends beyond the canvas and into the relationships built throughout the process and I believe this to be of equal importance to my practice as the mediums themselves.

Many of my artistic themes are centred around being a young female painter in the 21st century. Figurative and portrait work, alongside oil painting are historically male dominant areas of art history. I take pride in reclaiming these two components for my own, challenging the sexualisation of female models and the patriarchal views in opposition of female figurative artists throughout these eras. My current body of work includes interviewing practicing female artists in Stroud and giving recognition to them through a series of portraits of each participant.
